HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY
1. When did the women’s rugby movement start in your country and what is its history? How is rugby structured in your country?
The first attempts to create a women’s team date back to around 2003–2004. Our national women’s rugby sevens team has existed since 2005. It all began with a small group, led by a very dedicated coach and equally determined players, who traveled and played against teams across Rugby Europe while also working to establish more women’s teams in Austria.
Currently, 11 clubs either have or are in the process of building a women’s team. Smaller teams often combine with others to ensure that players can gain game time and experience. Before COVID, there were more players, but now we are growing again. We run a sevens championship with 8 tournaments throughout the year, and we are currently rebuilding a fifteens program. The goal is to play our first official international women’s rugby fifteens match in the autumn.
2. Do you think playing rugby has a social impact for women in your country?
At the moment, no. But I believe that if we manage to raise awareness of rugby and reach a wider audience, we could have a significant impact on young women and on how they see themselves. I believe rugby is an opportunity to discover one’s potential and to grow.
3. In your view, what can rugby give to women in your country?
Rugby can offer a great deal to women in Austria, both at a personal level and in a broader social context. It is a sport that demands both physical and mental strength. For women, playing rugby can help build self-confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of personal empowerment—qualities that carry over into everyday life.
Austria, like many other countries, still faces gender stereotypes in sport. Women who play rugby are actively redefining what strength, determination, and leadership mean. Rugby has a culture deeply rooted in teamwork and solidarity. For Austrian women—especially those looking for a support network—the rugby community can offer friendship, mentorship, and a strong sense of belonging.
I also believe that playing rugby can open doors to leadership roles, both on and off the field. Coaching, refereeing, or working in rugby administration can serve as a springboard for Austrian women who want to establish themselves in sport and beyond.
JOURNEYS THROUGH RUGBY
1. When did you start playing rugby and how did you discover it?
To be honest, I had never been attracted to team sports before I started playing rugby. But when I began, I discovered so many different personalities…
2. What has rugby taught you that has had an impact on your daily life? Can you give an example of when a rugby mindset has been useful to you?
A lot, especially in terms of acceptance, courage, and leadership. Rugby can empower women by building their confidence and giving them the courage to try new things. I enjoy taking care of players, both as a coach and as a team leader. It’s not about a single moment—the mindset shows itself constantly in my active role. In rugby they call me “the team’s mum” or even “the team’s dad.”
3. Can you give me 3 words that connect rugby to freedom?
Knowing your limits, courage, and family.
4. What object represents you and why?
I brought my mouthguard. First of all, because I’m a dentist… but I also always carry spare mouthguards to help others.
